SME Model 30/2 Turntable

The SME Model 30/2 Turntable is available for demonstration in our Hull store by request.

With its many original design features the Model 30/2 is a unique turntable. There are no critical adjustments or setting up procedures. Its immaculate construction and finish stem from facilities and uncompromising quality control which have made SME a byword for engineering excellence. Judged by Germany’s AUDIO ‘the best turntable of all time’ the Model 30/2 can be for the fortunate owner of an analogue collection the key to lasting musical enjoyment.

The SME Model 30/2 Turntable sub chassis is hung using 12 strands of rubber, forming 60 purpose moulded O rings. Four fluid dampers, one in each supporting columns keep check of any sub-chassis movement, offering a resistive ground-path for acoustic signals. This function is adjustable through trimmers which can be used in conjunction with a gauge, found at the front of the deck, to give recommended settings to suit your requirements. The SME Model 30/2's control of vibration is fundamental to the design of the turntable and goes a long way in to helping it deliver that signature uncoloured, natural performance.

A fully machined 7.5kg platter sits on this providing extra damping. The SME Model 30/2 platter is completed thanks to a diamond turned top surface with a fine scroll finish giving an optimal record interface. To keep your record in place the Model 30/2 Turntable comes with a large diameter reflex record clamp.

All of this is driven by a 3 phase, brushless outrunner motor with 8-pole Neodymium magnets and 3 integrated Hall effect sensors. Due to the motors weight (2.5kg) it is virtually vibrationless, but this hasn't stopped SME taking it one step further by isolating the motor further by using urethane mounts that are adjustable for accurate belt positioning.

SME have built pick-up arms for more than thirty-five years and the design and engineering experience gained has been applied in the Model 30/2, a precision turntable created to compliment the SME Series V regarded by many as: ‘the best pick-up arm in the world’.

SME Turntables At Fanthorpes

SME turntables are built by the Scale Model Equipment Company. The company was formed in 1946 by Alastair Robertson-Aikman to make models and detailed parts for the model engineering trade. However, in 1959 Alastair required a tonearm arm of his own and designed a prototype to critical acclaim, so in September of 1959 the company was re-branded to SME. Its first precision tonearm went into production comprising of individually machined components. The SME tonearms are seen as iconic within the industry.

Now with over 50 years experience of making tonearms SME still manufacture in house and are considered the leaders in making quality, precision tonearms and turntables.
