KEF Reference Meta Speakers Series Launched

KEF REFERENCE META

The Reference series encompasses two three-way floorstanding speakers, a three-way standmount speaker, and two three-way centre speakers that can be used as Left-Centre-Right speakers.

KEF REFERENCE CABINETS

The composition of The Reference sees all cabinets designed by using finite element analysis to determine the ideal shape, and bracing geometry to minimise secondary radiation from the sides. Constrained Layer Damping is applied to turn what little vibration is left into heat.

The cabinets are then finished in a high-gloss or detailed, pair-matched wood veneers to complement the front baffle designed to eliminate anomalies caused by diffraction. Five finishes are available, a combination of three cabinet finishes and five driver cone colours.

MIDRANGE HORN

A new ultra-low distortion midrange motor design lowers the total harmonic distortion in the midrange and reduces thermal compression, improving efficiency.

The contours of the dome within The Reference’s midrange horn and surround are all computer-optimised to ensure a perfectly smooth transition to the cabinet. KEF’s patented tangerine waveguide technology manages the airflow.

The Reference’s bass driver also benefits from a massive, vented magnet assembly, a large aluminium voice coil and a light and stiff alloy cone.

METAMATERIAL ABSORPTION TECHNOLOGY

In 2021 we saw KEF KEF put MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology) into its LS50 Meta and LS50 Wireless II standmount loudspeakers. Why? To better absorb unwanted sound coming from the back wave of the Uni-Q driver’s tweeter. According to KEF, metamaterials can prevent the build-up of standing waves inside the speaker and drive down distortion. This week, KEF has announced Meta(material) updates to its high-end Blade and Reference lines.

A metamaterial is made from naturally occurring materials but possesses properties not present in those naturally occurring materials. KEF’s engineers worked with Hong Kong’s Acoustic Metamaterials Group (AMG) to create a small disc with a maze-like surface that offers absorption coefficients not present in its ingredient materials. Inside each Blade Meta and Reference Meta model, the MAT disc sits behind the tweeter of a 12th Generation Uni-Q driver to absorb 99% of ‘unwanted sound’.

THE REFERENCE FINISHES

Five finishes are available by blending three cabinet finishes with five driver cone colours: Satin Walnut/Silver, High-Gloss White/Blue, High-Gloss White Champagne, High-Gloss Black/Grey, High-Gloss Black/Copper

You can also add matching grilles to each speaker in the range. Prices vary dependent on speaker from £75 to £250.
