Cascading features from the Nexus such as the micron tolerance bearings and the adjustable progressive Bias, the Altus will impress with a performance which has focus and immediacy whilst retaining a delicacy that is absolutely captivating.
AVIDs rigid bearing architecture has been passed down from the Nexus to achieve realistic sonic images carved in the soundscape, astonishing your senses with a sound you can virtually touch.
Altus employs an thick walled aluminium arm tube to make sure the cartridge is held securely above the record and aid transmission of vibration away from the cartridge, so your music is unveiled.
HEADSHELL
The headshell of the Altus tonearm is created through a precise laser cutting process on solid aluminium, ensuring high accuracy tolerances and a steadfast base for the cartridge. Unlike other headshells, it does not have weight reducing holes that can negatively impact vibration transmission and cause distorted sound. The headshell is fitted to a solid aluminium collar for seamless integration with the arm tube, resulting in a more realistic sound experience with heightened dimensionality in vocal and instrument representation.
ARM TUBE
A secure cartridge placement above the record is essential to prevent distortions or loss of information in music. To avoid loss of detail, especially for backing vocals, the Altus employs an arm tube with a 2mm thick wall. A rigid arm tube reduces the impact of higher frequency vibrations on sound quality by enhancing vibration transmission away from the cartridge.
BEARINGS
Avid understands that the overall rigidity of the tonearm structure is crucial for accurate reproduction of everything captured in records. Just like the bearing of the turntable, the tonearm bearings directly impact the quality of the sound that is heard.
That's why all Avid tonearms are meticulously hand-built and individually tested to extreme limits. High specification ball race bearings are painstakingly fitted, and both horizontal and vertical bearing shafts are machined and ground to micron limits. This ensures that the only movement possible is in the desired directions, with almost zero friction and zero loss of sound quality.
DUAL BIAS
Bias, also known as anti-skate, is a mechanism designed to counteract the natural inward force pulling the tonearm toward the centre of the record. If uncorrected, this force can lead to uneven tracking and distorted sound.
Our research has revealed that the required bias force varies across the record's surface. Higher levels are needed at the beginning and end of the record, with reduced force required in the middle. Additionally, the optimal bias setting depends on the stylus profile of the cartridge in use.
To address these variations, the Altus V2 models incorporate a groundbreaking bias compensation system. This innovation allows for independent adjustment of the bias force at the beginning, middle, and end of the record, ensuring precise tracking and superior audio performance across the entire playing surface.
