Discover the Chord Signature XL Loudspeaker Cable – Performance and Review
The SignatureXL is the latest iteration of one of Chord Cables’ longest-standing and universally acclaimed products. First introduced in 2004, the original Signature XL speaker cable was the company’s first high-frequency shielded design, representing a significant leap in speaker cable performance.
At its launch, the original Signature XL cables stood out as Chord’s largest, stiffest, and most striking offering. It featured oxygen-free copper conductors, gas-foamed polyethylene insulation, a three-layer braid and foil shielding effective at high frequencies, and a flexible polyethylene outer jacket. While it was just flexible enough to integrate into audio systems, the cable’s performance spoke for itself. Without the need for press releases or reviews, word-of-mouth demand drove its popularity to such an extent that a near-permanent waiting list emerged.
For approximately a decade, the design remained unchanged until advancements in manufacturing techniques and materials enabled Chord to enhance the cable’s performance. Improvements such as more efficient shielding, silver-plated conductors, and PTFE insulation resulted in a more neutral tonal characteristic and greater capacity for detail, dynamics, and timbre. This updated version was introduced as the Signature Reference, another step forward in Chord’s high-performance speaker cable range.
Like many of Chord’s speaker cables, the Signature Reference used PTFE insulation (often recognized as Teflon™). Before the introduction of Taylon®, PTFE was Chord’s preferred material due to its exceptional performance, despite its high cost. The Signature XL speaker cable remains a hallmark of Chord’s commitment to innovation.
As material technologies continued to evolve, new alternatives to PTFE became available. While Taylon® remains too costly for inclusion in the Signature range, Chord identified a suitable family of insulation materials known as XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene). One particular variation of XLPE, following extensive listening tests, demonstrated a clear improvement over PTFE as used in the Signature Reference. This innovation further enhances the Chord Signature XL cables’ ability to deliver unmatched sound quality.
Each set of SignatureXL speaker cables is handcrafted to order at Chord Cables’ UK factory and terminated with ChordOhmic 4mm banana plugs or ChordOhmic spade connectors. Customers can choose between red/black or all-black color combinations. Custom Signature XL options are available upon request, ensuring a perfect fit for every audio system.
These refinements result in a significant leap forward in musical reproduction at this price point. However, Chord encourages music enthusiasts to hear the difference for themselves by arranging a demonstration of the Chord Signature XL speaker cable at their nearest retailer.
SignatureXL speaker cables are sold in terminated pairs, with custom options available upon request. Discover the performance of Chord Signature XL cables and elevate your audio system today.
