Quad ESL 2812X Electrostatic Loudspeakers

The Quad ESL 2812X is available for demonstration in our Hull store by request.

The Quad ESL 2812X represents the most advanced evolution of Quad’s legendary electrostatic loudspeaker design. Developed through the intensive ESL X Project, this flagship model benefits from a complete re-engineering of manufacturing processes to deliver higher precision, lower distortion, and even greater musical realism. Overseen by Paul McConville, the world’s foremost authority on Quad ESL design, the 2812X sets a new benchmark for electrostatic loudspeaker performance.

ESL X Project: Redefining the Quad ESL 2812X

Launched in 2019, the ESL X Project was a deep technical audit of Quad’s dedicated electrostatic loudspeaker facility. Every aspect of Quad ESL 2812X production was scrutinised, including materials, tooling, diaphragm tensioning, stator coating, etching, assembly techniques, and quality control. The aim was refinement rather than reinvention, extracting the maximum performance from Quad’s proven electrostatic architecture.

Advanced Manufacturing for Higher Accuracy

Using laser-precision metrology, Quad engineers refined every critical stage of production. Improvements to spraying accuracy, diaphragm alignment, panel tension consistency, and final assembly tolerances deliver superior panel matching and improved system integrity, directly enhancing the coherence and transparency of the Quad ESL 2812X.

The Electrostatic Advantage

Unlike conventional moving-coil loudspeakers, the Quad ESL 2812X uses full-range electrostatic panels. An ultra-light Mylar diaphragm—around ten times thinner than a human hair—is suspended between two perforated stators and charged to approximately 5,250V DC. This design delivers ultra-low distortion, lightning-fast transient response, and exceptional midrange clarity.

Point-Source Imaging and Soundstage

Building on Quad’s iconic ESL-63 heritage, the Quad ESL 2812X employs a concentric ring electrode design with a precision delay line. This creates true point-source radiation, producing pinpoint stereo imaging and a deeply immersive, holographic soundstage.

High Voltage Control, Low Distortion

Operating at high voltage allows the Quad ESL 2812X to maintain precise control over diaphragm movement. A redesigned high-voltage multiplier circuit ensures stability, linearity, and protection under demanding dynamic conditions while preserving the speaker’s natural tonal balance.

X-Level Electronics Architecture

A major upgrade in the Quad ESL 2812X is its new modular electronics layout. The original single PCB has been divided into three dedicated modules: a High-Voltage Multiplier Module, a Control and Protection Module, and a Low-Voltage Signal Module. This separation reduces noise, interference, and crosstalk.

UK-Built Audio Transformers

Quad has returned to UK-manufactured, custom-specified audio transformers for the ESL 2812X. These deliver wider bandwidth, improved transient response, enhanced micro-detail, and greater soundstage depth, placing the 2812X at the pinnacle of electrostatic loudspeaker design.
