The Spendor Classic 4/5 is the most compact model in the Classic Series — and, for its size, one of the most fully resolved. It's a genuine shelf or stand-mount design, built around Spendor's BBC-derived thin-walled cabinet philosophy, and it manages a surprisingly deep, extended low end for such a small enclosure, without the artificial brightness or bloated bass that can characterise other compact speakers.
Like every Spendor speaker, the Classic 4/5 is designed, engineered and hand-built at the company's own facility in Sheffield. Its cabinet uses the same varying-thickness, carefully damped construction found across the Classic Series, letting the enclosure resonate in a controlled way rather than fighting it entirely — the traditional BBC monitor approach that gives Classic Series speakers their distinctive, easy-going character.
It's an ideal starting point into Classic Series ownership: compact enough for a bookshelf or small stand, but with a maturity of sound that belies its size and entry-level position in the range.

Yes — it's a shelf or stand-mount design. A dedicated Spendor Classic 4/5 stand is available to set it at the correct listening height.
It's rated for amplifiers between 25W and 100W and presents an easy 8 ohm load, so it works well with modest entry-level amplifiers.
The 4/5 is the more compact of the two, with a smaller cabinet and higher bass roll-off (55Hz vs 40Hz). The 3/1 has more low-end extension and a larger cabinet, suited to slightly larger rooms.
