Martin Logan Speakers At Fanthorpes HiFi

Martin Logan Logo

Martin Logan Speakers now at Fanthorpes HiFi

Martin Logan speakers are a unique speaker design like nothing currently at Fanthorpes HiFi.

Formed in Kansas USA in the 1970′s by Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland. Both driven by their passion for music they were determined to design an electrostatic speaker that would work in a domestic enviroment.

Years of research and development led Martin Logan to unveil its first prototype in 1983, the Monolith, to critical acclaim and since then they have never loked back.

Martin Logan are now firmly established as the world leaders in Hybrid Electrostatic design. The Martin Logan hybrid design pairs an Electrostatic panel with a conventional cone speaker for bass, this results in a stylish, elegant electrostatic speaker that combines beautiful clarity with powerful bass.

We have a growing portfolio of Martin Logan speakers available for demonstration in our Hull store that includes the Electromotion series plus Martin Logan ESL 9, ESL 13A and ESL 15A with more lines to be introduced to the store over the coming weeks.

Fanthorpes HiFi at the Stylus Show 2017

A last-minute plan has come together & we now pleased to inform you that we will be exhibiting at Stylus Show North 2017, in Manchester.

The event will take place from the 18th – 19th March at the The Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa. Located a block from Piccadilly train station. With us exhibiting in MEETING ROOM 10

We’re really looking forward to the event as it gives us a fantastic chance to connect and chat with our ever growing list of valued customers.

We have decided to take three different brands of turntable;AVID Acutus (£11999) with an SME V, Bryston BLP-1 (£3995) & the Luxman PD171A (£5299). All the decks are contrasting in design, deliver different styles of performance.

The rest of the system:

Chord Company unveil Sarum T range

Chord Company unveil Sarum T range

Chord Sarum T builds on the hugely successful Sarum Super Tuned ARAY cable range. The Sarum T range introduces Chord’s very own insulation material, Taylon, bringing a major performance upgrade. Previous Sarum ranges have used PTFE insulation, however the upgrade to Taylon introduces a huge wealth of performance benefits.

Chord discovered Taylon, a new, high-technology alternative to PTFE in 2015. Designed originally for super critical, precision guided weapons systems, Taylon eliminates the temperature related phase instability and mechanical variation that hinders the sonic and musical performance of PTFE.

This breakthrough led to the creation of the flagship ChordMusic range, which Chord have now fed down into the Sarum T range of cables.

Combining Taylon® insulated conductors, and Chord’s most advanced Super ARAY technology, Chord Sarum T offers a huge upgrade in performance over the Sarum Tuned ARAY range. It offers the same natural sense of rhythm, pace, musical energy and presence that ChordMusic delivers, but in a simplified design that costs considerably less.

PMC twenty series to twenty5 series – a comparison

PMC twenty series to twenty5 series – a comparison

We initially wrote a small piece on the twenty5 series upon our return from Munich this year. We launched it in store with the designer Oliver Thomas.

Technically there is a lot that differentiates this from the twenty series. Different cabinet bracing, different bass drive unit, laminair technology is arguably the biggest development they’ve made – to name but just a few.

After the 9 months (ish) we have had them in store – we’re now getting to know the characteristics of the models. We’ve now sold a few pairs and installed them in different environments and it is clear that the twenty5 series offers a big step up, something over and above for existing twenty series owners.

For us the best selling model of the twenty series was the Twenty 23. I own a pair and think it’s a fantastic speaker, which reviews and our stock history confirm. The twenty5 23 model (£2969) has naturally become the one we have heard, demoed & sold the most of so far into the new series.

The Laminair technology, reduces the turbulence in the transmission line, this warranted a change of bass drive unit. The twenty series used a doped paper, this has been replaced with a glass fibre drive-unit as it is much more rigid it can be driven harder, travel further delivering outstanding quality in the low frequency band. What i think, most PMC owners enjoy is the clean, low distortion bass, which has a smooth extension.

Nothing is lost, however, these bring bass which is solid, muscular but tuneful. The mid-band is also a notable change; more natural sophisticated tones to vocals. This elegance is carried into the high frequency range also. Although, the key point to take in the post is it this doesn’t waver from what we all love about PMC; precise, natural, neutral & balanced in presentation.

You will have noticed the price of them sits higher than Twenty series. This is validated, in performance terms – as it should be. I would suggest these speakers really take a big step to hi-end presentation. The last pair I sold were on Bryston 4B3 (£5299) and Bryston BP26 (£4999) based on a few factors – a direct result of the in store launch – their performance against the twenty series.

We want to help as many of you as possible make the upgrade, if you are interested. So contact us on 01482 223095 email for a trade in valuation, demonstration or advice.

More and more twenty series is on the market with people making the upgrade – this can bring market values of part exchange down – give us a call or email to discuss. Finance and UK wide install service is also available.

Range breakdown:

PMC Twenty5 21 – £1869
PMC Twenty5 22 – £2449
PMC Twenty5 23 – £2969
PMC Twenty5 24 – £4249
PMC Twenty5 26 – £6995

Spendor D9 Speakers – A Closer Look

Spendor D9 Speakers available on demonstration

Spendor have always been a one of the shop favourite brands – products like the new D9 are a stark reminder that we should make noise about them. D9 is the latest from their portfolio – which are now a permanent, in store demonstration product. This is a belated replacement to the A9 – so it is the biggest speaker in terms of cabinet size, accross A & D lines but fits in with the design concept of the more recently successful D7.

Comparisons will naturally be made against the D7 – but make no mistake this speaker performs to levels beyond the D7. They do however, use the same high-frequency driver – the LPZ (Linear Pressure Zone) tweeter. I have written before, this drive unit injected a bit excitement to the traditional & polite sound of previous Spendor model, in my opinion. This driver sits below the mid-range in a cabinet 1,125mm tall – the positioning of this drive unit helps improves the horizontal dispersion & brings it closer to ear height for a listener when sat down – a bigger sweet spot.

This is a true three-way design; a dedicated driver for High, Mid-Range & Low Frequencies. As many of you will know, separating the job of each driver means it can work more comfortably within its parameters. New Spendor 18cm drive units have been developed for the D9, all Spendor bass & mid-range drive units are made in house, within strict tolerances. Bass driver units are made of Kevlar composite – chosen for its lightweight & ridged properties. Mid-range is polymer cone which is isolated in a separate enclosure in the top of the cabinet. A phase correction plug sits in the centre of the driver improving rigidity.

In the D9 low frequencies are handled by two specially designed bass drivers in a substantial volume enclosure. For optimum low frequency response and power handling the enclosure is ported, but not like any conventional loudspeaker. The D9 incorporates Spendors innovative Fifth Generation Linear Flow Port Technology. Inspired by Formula 1 diffuser technology it offers significant advantages over any conventional port or transmission line speakers.

The Spendor D9 looks as good as it sounds. Available in four standard wood veneer finishes or four high gloss premium finishes, the D9 is sure to look at home in any living space.

We have the Spendor D9 on permanent demonstration in our Hull store, for more information please call us on 01482 223096 or email
