The A2 is the mid-sized floorstander in Børresen's new A-Series, which sits between the C-Series and the X-Series in the range. It takes technology developed for Børresen's far more expensive models and puts it into a more affordable, beautifully finished Danish loudspeaker, with no compromise on the speed, detail and musicality the brand is known for.
Børresen's top-tier loudspeakers have earned a reputation for remarkable transparency and timing. The A-Series brings the core of that thinking to a wider audience. The A2 uses the same RP94 ribbon tweeter found further up the range, combined with Børresen's DCC5s carbon sandwich drivers, in a cabinet designed to keep noise and resonance to an absolute minimum.
The A2 is a 2.5-way design. Two DCC5s drivers share the work: one handles bass and midrange, while the second adds bass weight and extension. This gives the A2 a fuller, deeper low end than the A1 standmount, with a quoted frequency response of 35Hz to 50kHz, while keeping the midrange clean and uncluttered.
The RP94 ribbon tweeter works from 2.5kHz upwards. Its aluminium-coated nylon/aramid membrane weighs only 0.01 grams, so it starts and stops almost instantly. That means sharp transients, fine detail and an open, airy treble. It is also very robust, staying linear and free of audible distortion even on big dynamic peaks.
The DCC5s diaphragm is made from an aramid honeycomb core bonded between two carbon fibre skins. The result is very stiff and very light, which pushes unwanted resonances out of the driver's working range and lowers distortion. Behind it, a ferrite magnet system with dual copper caps reduces voice coil inductance, and a titanium voice coil former adds rigidity without extra mass. The upshot is a driver that follows the music quickly and precisely, with excellent control and coherence.
Børresen sees noise, whether acoustic, electrical or airborne, as one of the biggest limits on sound quality. Everything in the A2 is designed with that in mind: low-mass drivers, magnet systems built for low distortion, a crossover optimised for coherence and minimal signal loss, and a well-damped cabinet. Together they lower the noise floor, so you hear more of the recording and less of the speaker.
Vibration from the floor and resonance within the cabinet can both blur the sound. All Børresen loudspeakers are designed to work with Ansuz Darkz resonance control devices, made by Børresen's sister company. Darkz uses very hard materials and a precision ball-bearing interface to control vibration between the speaker and the floor. They are optional, but Børresen strongly recommends them, and we are happy to demonstrate the difference.
The A2 is finished in real wood veneer, in a choice of satin walnut or satin black ash. The design nods to Børresen's original 0-Series in a cleaner, simpler form, making the A2 a speaker that looks as good in a living room as it sounds.
