The Chord Quartet Upscaler is the most advanced digital audio processor ever created by Chord Electronics. Designed to redefine the limits of digital playback, the Quartet introduces revolutionary upscaling technology capable of transforming timing accuracy, realism, and musicality within any high-end digital audio system.
Built around the groundbreaking Blackbird WTA (Watts Transient Aligned) filter architecture, the Quartet delivers unprecedented transient precision and extraordinary waveform reconstruction. Featuring four million taps, the Blackbird filter represents the culmination of more than four decades of digital audio research by Rob Watts.
Compared with previous Chord upscalers, the Quartet achieves a tenfold improvement in transient timing accuracy. The result is greater instrument separation, sharper imaging, enhanced micro-detail retrieval, and a more natural analogue-like presentation.
Unlike conventional digital processors that rely on FFT-based software convolution, the Quartet performs all filtering directly within dedicated hardware. This advanced design preserves signal integrity and eliminates additional timing errors introduced by software-based processing.
To manage the immense computational demands of the Blackbird WTA filter, the Chord Quartet employs five high-performance Xilinx FPGAs delivering over 3,700 DSP cores and more than two million lines of proprietary code for extraordinary digital reconstruction accuracy.
The Quartet is capable of outputting ultra-high-resolution digital audio up to 768 kHz via dual BNC outputs, making it the ideal upgrade for flagship Chord DAC systems including the acclaimed Chord DAVE DAC.
For the first time in a Chord Electronics upscaler, the Quartet incorporates a proprietary Pulse Array ADC, enabling analogue sources such as turntables and reel-to-reel machines to benefit directly from advanced upscaling technology while maintaining exceptional transparency and timing coherence.
The Chord Quartet Upscaler features a sophisticated two-box architecture that physically separates the sensitive audio circuitry from the dedicated external power supply. This advanced design dramatically reduces mains-borne interference and high-frequency noise contamination for lower noise floor performance.
