Spendor A4.2 Floorstanding Speakers

The Spendor A4.2 is the mid-range model in the A-Line Mark 2 range, sitting between the compact A2.2 and the flagship A7.2. It replaces the original A4 — a four-time consecutive What Hi-Fi? Award winner between 2019 and 2022 — with an updated tweeter, a larger bass/mid driver and a rebuilt crossover, giving it noticeably more scale and bass weight than the A2.2 while staying slim enough for most living rooms.

Like every Spendor speaker, the A4.2 is designed, engineered and hand-built at the company's own facility in Sheffield. A new 27mm wide-surround, rear-chambered tweeter brings a more open, dynamic top end, while the crossover — rebuilt from the ground up and set at 2kHz — was tuned for low phase error and smooth impedance behaviour, giving the A4.2 a reputation for seamless driver integration. True to Spendor's BBC broadcast heritage, the result favours natural tonal balance over an artificially exciting sound.

Whether you're stepping up from a standmount pair, or want more low-end authority than the A2.2 can offer without moving to the larger A7.2, the A4.2 is a genuine step up in scale and dynamics while remaining easy to place and live with day to day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amplifier does the Spendor A4.2 need?

The A4.2 is rated for amplifiers between 25W and 150W and presents a 6.75 ohm nominal impedance (dipping to 5.4 ohms), so it pairs comfortably with most mid-range integrated amplifiers.

How is the Spendor A4.2 different from the original A4?

The Mark 2 version introduces a new 27mm wide-surround, rear-chambered tweeter and a crossover rebuilt from the ground up, improving driver integration and off-axis performance over the original A4, which was a four-time consecutive What Hi-Fi? Award winner.

Should I choose the A4.2 or the A2.2?

The A4.2 has a larger bass/mid driver and a taller cabinet than the A2.2, giving it more low-end weight and a bigger overall sound. Choose the A2.2 if space is tight or you prefer the most compact floorstander in the range; choose the A4.2 if you want more scale without moving up to the flagship A7.2.
