PMC twenty series to twenty5 series - a comparison
We initially wrote a small piece on the twenty5 series upon our return from Munich this year. We launched it in store with the designer Oliver Thomas.
Technically there is a lot that differentiates this from the twenty series. Different cabinet bracing, different bass drive unit, laminair technology is arguably the biggest development they've made - to name but just a few.
After the 9 months (ish) we have had them in store - we're now getting to know the characteristics of the models. We've now sold a few pairs and installed them in different environments and it is clear that the twenty5 series offers a big step up, something over and above for existing twenty series owners.
For us the best selling model of the twenty series was the Twenty 23. I own a pair and think its a fantastic speaker, which reviews and our stock history confirm. The twenty5 23 model (£2969) has naturally become the one we have heard, demoed & sold the most of so far into the new series.
The Laminair technology, reduces the turbulence in the transmission line, this warranted a change of bass drive unit. The twenty series used a doped paper, this has been replaced with a glass fibre drive-unit as it is much more rigid it can be driven harder, travel further delivering outstanding quality in the low frequency band. What i think, most PMC owners enjoy is the clean, low distortion bass, which has a smooth extension.
Nothing is lost, however, these bring bass which is solid, muscular but tuneful. The mid-band is also a notable change; more natural sophisticated tones to vocals. This elegance is carried into the high frequency range also. Although, the key point to take in the post is it this doesn't waver from what we all love about PMC; precise, natural, neutral & balanced in presentation.
You will have noticed the price of them sits higher than Twenty series. This is validated, in performance terms - as it should be. I would suggest these speakers really take a big step to hi-end presentation. The last pair I sold were on Bryston 4B3 (£5299) and Bryston BP26 (£4999) based on a few factors - a direct result of the in store launch their performance against the twenty series.
We want to help as many of you as possible make the upgrade, if you are interested. So contact us on 01482 223095 email shop@fanthorpes.co.uk for a trade in valuation, demonstration or advice.
More and more twenty series is on the market with people making the upgrade - this can bring market values of part exchange down - give us a call or email to discuss. Finance and UK wide install service is also available.
